Michael D. Haughey, P.E., CEM, HBDP, LEED AP, Principal

 Representative Project Experience:

Poudre School District – Operations Center – Ground-source Heat pumps, heat recovery, natural ventilation, daylighting, and more

Design of ground-source heat pump system, heat-recovery ventilation, daylighting and occupancy sensors integration with mechanical, and demonstration solar photovoltaic system (Excellent Use of Renewable Energy in Buildings award from the Colorado Renewable Energy Society, 2002); Regional ASHRAE Award in 2003 for New Institutional Buildings category. Colorado Renewable Energy Society 2002 Renewable Energy in Buildings award for daylighting and mechanical engineering. Michael was the project manager for mechanical, daylighting, and electrical systems design.

Lucille Erwin Middle School Chilled Water Plant – chiller water/ice thermal storage system

Design of an ice thermal storage chilled water system serving a large middle school (honors (3rd place) society (international) ASHRAE award, 2003 for New Institutional Buildings category).  The design is a unique “flexible pumping” and valve system that uses only the necessary pumping energy for the task at hand.  The system monitors building kW and has the ability to modulate the chilled water and ice system components to avoid setting monthly utility kW peaks.  The system monitors remaining ice and uses that in calculations that save ice for the end of the day.

Denver Place – LEED for Existing Buildings (EB) pilot project

LEED Accredited Professional for LEED for Existing Buildings (EB) pilot project under sub-contract to E-Cube, Inc.  Project comprises a full city block in downtown Denver including two office towers, 34 and 23 stories each, connected by two-six level Terraces, comprising 815,000 gross square feet.  Project has been awarded a LEED EB Gold rating and was the first LEED EB, and first LEED Gold, in Colorado.

Palmer Ridge High School

Peer review for new high school.  Systems include ground-coupled heat pumps, energy recovery ventilation, and a variety of measures intended to make this school one of the lowest energy use high schools in the State.

Sedalia Residence – Radiant and ground-coupled heat pump heating and cooling

Mechanical and plumbing design for residence using ground-coupled heat pumps to provide heating and cooling through radiant floors, energy recovery ventilator for fresh air, whole house fans for moderate weather ventilation, and supplemental fan-coils for dehumidification.  Project won a McGraw-Hill Gold Hard Hat award in 2006.

Indian Hills Net Zero Energy Residence

Mechanical design for a new net zero residence.  Systems include solar thermal heating (domestic hot water, space heat), interface with PV solar, energy recovery, variable speed main fan system, radiant floor heating, sun-space heat transfer.

Schriever Data Center troubleshooting

Peer review and analysis of mechanical design and commissioning results of chilled water system with ice thermal storage and development of remediation design to increase capacity and reliability of a high-criticality facility.

Silver Sage Village – Radiant heating, domestic solar hot water, and DX cooling

Mechanical and plumbing design for co-housing project with high efficiency condensing boilers to provide heating through baseboard radiation with radiant floors as a unit upgrade option, and split-system DX for optional cooling.

Shambhala Mountain Center – Rigden Lodge – Radiant heating and domestic solar hot water

Mechanical and plumbing design for meditation, dormitory, and multi-purpose project with high efficiency condensing boilers to provide heating through baseboard radiation with radiant floors in specific areas.

Century Elementary School, Aurora, Colorado – Renovation of HVAC system

Mechanical design for 50,000 sq. ft. elementary school HVAC system renovation and upgrade.  Systems include new high efficiency condensing boilers, chilled water, and replacement of pneumatic controls with digital.

Harvest House – Net Zero Energy Home Consultation

Mechanical consultation for a net-zero energy home in Boulder Colorado.  Systems consultation include ground-coupled “cool tube” for outside air pre-heat and pre-cooling, passive solar heat transfer from sun space to interior, and distribution of ventilation air from heat recovery to interior spaces.

Riverdale Pool Clubhouse, Thornton, Colorado

HVAC and plumbing design for small community pool clubhouse.  Project construction is complete.  Typical of approximately five projects

Field testing and design analysis for downtown Denver office building to resolve space pressurization and heating and cooling problems as sub-consultant to Expert Witness Engineer.

Denver Athletic Club; Athletic Addition; Denver, Colorado

Project Manager of HVAC, Plumbing and Fire Protection design.  The addition included a 100 meter pool, Racquet Ball and Squash courts, lockers, exercise room and snack bar. The system design utilized outside air control for dehumidification and included run-around loop heat recovery.  The systems were constant volume air handling units with chilled water cooling and hot water heating coils.  The project included an air cooled chiller and a boiler plant.

Clayton College, Denver, Colorado

Project Manager for HVAC and Plumbing design of complete kitchen remodel to add ventilation, hoods, make-up air and plumbing to upgrade for code compliance and expanded use.

Heritage and Sunset Middle Schools Energy Improvements, Longmont, Colorado

Engineering support services for design and construction administration of energy conservation measures including refurbishment of existing rooftop units (replacement of existing motors and addition of VFDs to the supply fan motors) and revision of the temperature control sequence

Loveland High School Ventilation Upgrade, Loveland, Colorado

Design for new ventilation system using custom rooftop air handling equipment to replace existing interior unit ventilator system.  Schematic designs included a future ice thermal storage chilled water central plant for the school.  Space and fan HP was allowed to accommodate future cooling coils in the air handling equipment.  Roof-mounted ductwork in weatherproof enclosures were used due to lack of ceiling space.  Sound attenuators, heavy gauge ductwork, and special detailing were provided for sound control.  Heating water piping was mounted above the roof, anchored, and provided with expansion loops and guides.  Numerous bid packages were provided to allow flexibility with the Owner’s budget.  Specifications included detailed Commissioning requirements, which was performed by E-Cube, Inc.
