Projects – Solar Energy, PV Integration, & Other Renewables

Michael D. Haughey, P.E., CEM, HBDP, LEED AP, Principal:

Shambhala Mountain Center – Rigden Lodge, Red Feather Lakes, Colorado – Radiant heating and domestic solar hot water

Provided design integration of the solar system with the mechanical systems.

The solar system provides primary heat for the domestic hot water needs and is backed-up by the high efficiency boilers.

Poudre School District – Operations Center, Fort Collins, Colorado – Ground-source Heat pumps, heat recovery, natural ventilation, daylighting, and more

Provided mechanical and electrical engineering project management and coordination of the solar-PV system design.

A small roof-integrated demonstration solar-PV system provides an educational opportunity for students.

Sedalia Residence, Sedalia, Colorado – Radiant and ground-coupled heat pump heating and cooling

System designed for future addition of solar domestic hot water and a future windmill.  Services included estimation of electrical energy use for optimization of PV panel energy use.

Silver Sage Village, Boulder, Colorado – Radiant heating, domestic solar hot water, and DX cooling

Design services include integration of solar thermal system with the mechanical system.  The solar thermal provides heat for domestic hot water.

Indian Hills Residence, Indian Hills, Colorado – Net Zero, Solar Thermal, Variable Volume Heat Recovery, Radiant heat, and Air Coils

Mechanical design for a new net zero energy residence.  Systems include solar thermal heating (domestic hot water, space heat) and interface with PV solar. Provided design integration of solar thermal system with the mechanical system. Provided calculations balancing the solar thermal output, building mass, and passive heat gains toward the goal of net-zero annual energy.

Harvest House, Boulder, Colorado – Net Zero Energy Home Consultation

Mechanical consultation for a net-zero energy home in Boulder Colorado.  Systems consultation include ground-coupled “cool tube” for outside air pre-heat and pre-cooling, passive solar heat transfer from sun space to interior, and distribution of ventilation air from heat recovery to interior spaces.

Reed Residence, Crestone, Colorado – Solar Thermal System Addition

Design in progress for addition of solar thermal system to an existing residence. Present design uses evacuated tube collectors and storage tank to serve a new radiant floor heating system. The new solar system design is integrated with the existing radiant baseboard heating system and the domestic hot water system.
