Projects – Central Plants: Heating and/or Chilled Water
Michael D. Haughey, P.E., CEM, HBDP, LEED AP, Principal:
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Temple Complex Expansion, New Central Plant, Salt Lake City, Utah
Cost analysis, systems alternatives study, and chiller design for a 19,000 sf, 7,500 ton design output, central plant using 4,800 tons of chiller capacity and 6,846 tons of future ice storage capacity to serve the new Assembly Hall and existing and future buildings
Lucille Erwin Middle School Chilled Water Plant, Loveland, Colorado – chilled water/ice thermal storage system
Design of an ice thermal storage chilled water system serving a large middle school (honors (3rd place) society (international) ASHRAE award, 2003 for New Institutional Buildings category). The design is a unique “flexible pumping” and valve system that uses only the necessary pumping energy for the task at hand. The system monitors building kW and has the ability to modulate the chilled water and ice system components to avoid setting monthly utility kW peaks. The system monitors remaining ice and uses that in calculations that save ice for the end of the day.
